Have you ever tried to build your own web page or website knowing little to nothing about web design? According to the bulk of articles, I perused on the web, on how to make your own website, without exception, they all assure you, ‘it’s easy.’ In a pig’s eye.
I spent the last nine months putting together a new website book-casing my novels, and I can assure you, it was not a pleasant experience. I became gun shy every time I came across these dreaded words, ‘it’s easy’ and cringed doubting the validity of the article before I delved into it. ‘It’s easy’ is most often in the first sentence of an article.
Another thing that bothered me was terminology. Most of the articles failed to enlighten the reader, at least this reader, on things like, SEO, PR, xml, htm verses html, and then there was CSS, AJX, ASP, were these some kind of cleansers? What were banner adds, splash pages, back links and one-way-links? I could hazard a guess, but I was never sure until I did further research. Being a dyslexic, all this brought back nightmares of my first three years of school when I could not learn how to read.
Slowly, one agonizing day after another, I managed to conquer one small routine at a time, and if I didn’t stay away from the computer for more than a few hours, I managed to retain my new found knowledge. Hey, when you get old things slip away from you.
I did manage to reach my objective. I’m now a proud developer of a fine healthy website. All it cost me was nine months of eight to twelve hour days, seven days a week. If you haven’t attempted building a web page or a whole website, give it a try, It’s easy.
